11 Things I Bet You Didn't Know For The New Baby!!

Baby's Can't Have Honey In The First 12 Months...

I know what you’re thinking “….i mean, it’s honey…it’s honey dude. Really…” Well it turns out yes. I didn’t know this, it seems pretty harmless but honey may contain a bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum Bacteria, which lives in soil and dust. This bacteria can produce toxins in the baby’s intestines and that can lead to infant botulism.

Botulism can cause constipation which typically is accompanied by floppy baby movements, weakness, and difficulty sucking and feeding. If not treated, it can be life threatening though babies should make a full recovery when treated at the hospital. After 12 months, honey’s ok and harmless, as intestines can naturally move the naturally occurring toxins through the body before causing harm.

Find Your Community, But Do What's Best For You

Community is important, and it’s good to surround yourself with people that can relate, have knowledge, or experience and have empathy with you. However, know that social media can be a double-edged sword.

You’re going to get advice from everywhere but make a conscious decision to lean on yourself, knowledge and beliefs and stop listening to others. Attempting to keep up with everyone’s opinions can be stressful and it’s something we have to recognize early on if need be.

At the end of the day, if you and the baby and family are doing great while learning then that’s all that matters. So yes, find your tribe and do what’s right for you.

Baby's Are Born With Fontanelles

“Fonta – what?” I didn’t know either but, you may have noticed that your baby has a soft spot in the top-middle of its head and one on the back. These soft spots are what’s called Anterior Fontanelle and have a unique diamond shaped form. I remember bathing my baby and feeling around thinking “why does this feel like there’s a dip like that?” It’s perfectly normal for a few reasons in having the skull not fully fused: First so that they can mold to the shape of the birth canal, we know it’s pretty small right..ahem, anyway secondly the baby’s brain is going to be growing fast early and the spacing is going to accommodate that growth before gaps close and the skull comes together.

Baby's Become Smarter..

Now, you may have heard of some “stage-based toys” or possibly of “sensory boxes” but, it’s not the toys or things that stimulate or get baby’s brain activity to grow. What facilitates and affects the baby’s brain growth simply is you. Your engagement and interactivity as Dad during play with these tools or toys. “What does this sound like?” “What does this feel like?” “What is this doing?” “What does that sound like?” “What color is that?” And you’re actively playing and interacting with the baby with these objects during sensory play, that’s the thing that’s helping the baby develop and the baby’s brain grow. So, spending a lot on and having the most expensive toys out there isn’t really going to do anything if we’re not involved.
